Mark Purcell (80-84,90-92) spent his life in scouting and almost every summer at Haliburton Scout Reserve. Mark “officially” worked at HSR for eight summers from 1980 to 1984 and 1990 to 1992 where he served as Rifle Instructor, Assistant Store Manager, Composite Skipper, Outtripper, Environmental Improvement Specialist and Assistant Cook.
Mark could be found most weekends assisting at HSR as a volunteer almost every year he was not officially employed. Perhaps his most visible presence was his appearance at the Friday evening camp fire many weeks each summer where some creative segue would lead him into a rousing rendition of “The Lumberjack” song.
Mark attended Seneca College in the Recreation-Parks Operations and Services program, followed in 1991 by Culinary Management at George Brown College.
During the early 1990’s, Mark began to use his culinary skills to support the operations of the Leatham Scouting Centre at Woodland Trails Camp. When an administrative vacancy occurred in the camping department of the Greater Toronto Council, Rob Selby (92-06) asked Mark to fill in. Callers to the camping department soon became very familiar with the friendly voice and the helpful manner of “Mark in Camping” .
Mark remained with Scouts Canada for many years eventually working full time for the Central Ontario Administrative Area responsible for the management and administration of seven camps. In the past few years, Mark expressed a desire to resume the career path he had left in the early 1990’s and with the support of the council, was able to return to George Brown College to complete a post-graduate Food and Nutrition Management program.
Upon completion of this program, Mark was able to secure a position as an assistant food service supervisor at the Regency Manor Nursing and Retirement Home in Port Hope Ontario in April of this year, and resigned from Scouts Canada.
We are assured, however, that if you call the Regency Manor Nursing & Retirement Home and ask for Food Services, chances are a voice will answer, “Hello, Mark in Cooking…”
